UNBECOMING
The quietest rule in the world
July 21, 2026
The table is set for twelve. A girl, nine years old, laughs at her cousin's joke the way children laugh, with her whole body. From across the table, quietly, almost kindly: young ladies don't laugh like that. Beside her, a boy laughs louder at the same joke. Nobody moves. He keeps the punchline. She keeps the lesson.
The lesson has many verses and one melody.
Sit straight. Don't slouch. Don't get dirty. Don't say that out loud. Be responsible. Smile, but not too wide. Wait to be asked.
No one signs these orders. That is their genius. "It is not proper" has no author. You can argue with a father. You cannot argue with the air. A rule without a face cannot be looked in the eye.
Every language built its own lock for the same door. Spanish girls hear calladita te ves más bonita - you look prettier quiet. In Buenos Aires it comes with a chair: sentate como una señorita - sit like a young lady. French girls are praised for being sage comme une image - good as a picture, and a picture does not move. Italian mothers say stai composta - stay composed. German has das gehört sich nicht - it simply is not done.
In Hindi it is log kya kahenge - what will people say. Arabic has 'ayb; Turkish borrowed the same word and kept it: ayıp. Japanese has hashitanai. English has not ladylike - and America perfected the second half of the mechanism, the pardon printed for the other side of the table: boys will be boys. Polish, my first language, has nie wypada. Different locks. One cage.
And at the same table, a man. He may sprawl. Scratch. Adjust whatever needs adjusting. Interrupt. Reach for the last piece without apology. Not because he is stronger or freer by nature - because permission was printed for him at birth, and nobody ever asks to see it.
Watch the same act get two verdicts. He raises his voice: leadership. She raises hers: hysteria - a diagnosis with a womb sewn into its etymology. He eats with appetite: healthy. She does: letting herself go. He sits alone in a restaurant: a free man. She sits alone: a question mark. He goes grey: distinguished. She goes grey: giving up.
Here is the part I need you to read twice. It was never about ability. Never about desire. A girl who is not allowed to get dirty is not a girl who cannot dig. A woman who is not allowed to say what she thinks is not a woman without thoughts. The fence was never around her talent. It was around the permission to use it - and a fence around permission works better than a fence around a field, because the field never knows it is fenced.
Men are not free of the ledger; we keep a different page. Women were forbidden anger, men were forbidden tears. Each side of the table surrendered one emotion at the door. I wrote once about where men cry. This is the other half of that essay: where do women rage?
I have read the explanations. Honor. Modesty. Tradition. What people will say. I understand every word. I refuse to understand the sentence. I was handed the wider lane, and it took me too long to ask where the extra width came from.
I cannot issue you permission. No one can - because no one ever had the right to withhold it.
So, girls, women, ladies of every table: be yourselves. When you want. How you want. Loud, dirty-handed, honest, slouching, angry, alone, grey.
Everything becomes you.

I heard versions of this throughout my childhood. Sit properly. Lower your voice. Don’t make a scene. It takes years to realise they weren’t teaching you manners. They were teaching you how to disappear politely…
Loved it. Especially for this Women were forbidden anger, men were forbidden tears
